Wireless station 2MT - 'Two Emma Toc' - commenced transmissions at 7.15pm on Tuesday 14th February 1922. We are aiming to celebrate the centenary of this first broadcast along with other amateur radio & 2MT enthusiasts in February 2022, however this seems a long time to wait ! - so - we are planning an intermediate celebration for the 95th anniversary, on Tuesday 14th February 2017.
Our aim is twofold :
(1) to celebrate the UK's first regular broadcast station with a 3 day radio service - 'Radio Emma Toc', &
(2) to acknowledge the important role played by radio experimenters of the time with amateur radio transmissions from the original 2MT hut (now at Sandford Mill Museum in Chelmsford, UK).
Commencing on Sunday 12th February we intend to operate a 3 day internet radio service until Tuesday 14th February. Programmes will consist of radio related documentaries & vintage comedies, together with live programmes at various times from appropriate locations.
On Sunday & Tuesday we will be working alongside the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society & amateur radio colleagues operating a special event amateur radio station from the 'long low hut'. Between 7pm & 8pm on Tuesday 14th February, we will raise a glass (or two) to the original 2MT team & the radio experimenters of 1922, exactly 95 years on from the first 2MT transmission.
Throughout this project we are pleased to be guided by & working alongside our friend & ultimate 2MT enthusiast Tim Wander. Author & Marconi historian, Tim will be with us for our broadcasts & amateur radio transmissions.
If all goes to plan, our radio station will hopefully be available to a worldwide audience via the internet, & our amateur radio transmissions will hopefully be beamed across the ether to distant shores... Of course, as with the best laid plans - & some of the original 2MT broadcasts - there is a vast potential for things to go wrong, however we are happy to accept that this would be in keeping with the original spirit of 2MT, the frivolity of Captain Peter Eckersley, & the pioneering character of radio experimenters of the time !
We welcome listener participation throughout this celebration, & welcome your e-mails & amateur radio contacts. Above all, we would like our project to be 'born in laughter, & nurtured in laughter !'
